Paul Luikart, a Chicago blogger who also works with the homeless, has posted his thoughts about Nelson Algren and Art Shay. Here's an excerpt from his Into The Wilderness blog post about"The Man With the Golden Arm":
The book is a great, human-faced representation of poverty and addiction in Chicago that is surprisingly very similar to poverty and addiction in Chicago in 2007. I definitely recommend checking it out. Also, if you're by an art gallery or surfing the web, check out the work of photographer Art Shay. He and Algren were buddies and what Algren did in the literary world, Shay did in the photographic world.
