A quick note on my expenses. To live with the host family costs 20 euros a day and to have her do my laundry is 12 euros a week. However we struck a deal and she won't iron my clothes (I'm fine with a wrinkle or two) and I only pay 6 euros a week. The nearest laundromat is about half an hour away so that is not happening. The 20 euro rent includes breakfast (an orange, some walnuts, tea, toast- 8:20am), lunch (whatever she's making that day, generally amazing soups with bread and some veggie side dish- 2:30pm) and dinner (typically leftovers- still yummy, or a sandwich/salad- 9:30pm). So that adds up to 146 euros a week.
Eventually I might have to buy a textbook or something, but the 146 euros a week is my only fixed expense. Not bad for 3 meals a day, rent and laundry. Of course more money is being spent on various things (student admittance + taking pictures in the auto history museum 2 euros, Royal botanic garden 1 euro, churros y chocolate 4 euros, etc) and occasionally I go out for a meal.
Oh and gifts for family/friends and post cards are eventually going to cost something when I get around to getting them.
I had no idea that you would have to pay to stay with your host family, but it makes sense...and 146/week doesn't sound bad at all. Do make sure to eat lots of churros and chocolate while you're in Spain though, and know that I'm super jealous. :)
